Veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan (with over 60 films to his credit) returns to his South Indian roots to tell the story of Vengadam, a silk weaver from Kanchivaram, a small town in Tamil Nadu known for its fine silk saris. Vengadam toils all day weaving these expensive garments but cannot even dream of affording one. But when his daughter is born, Vengadam boldly proclaims that he will provide one for her eventual wedding day. To make good on his word, he steals bits of silk over the course of many years to weave the sari in secret. As the years go by, Vengadam gets swept up in the changing times when he meets a writer who teaches him about the Russian Revolution and inspires him to organize his fellow weavers against their oppressive bosses. But soon he finds his dreams for his daughter collide with his hopes for his fellow comrades. |
